Mud Race: Chikhaligutta

Chikhali Gutta is a thrilling bull race in Western Maharashtra, held post-monsoon after the rice harvest. Featuring powerful Khillari bulls, the race takes place on a flooded 100-meter mud track, testing speed and endurance. Riders guide their bulls through slippery terrain, with the fastest winning traditional shields, gold, and cash prizes. As a photographer, I captured the action from the finish line, narrowly dodging charging bulls in a heart-pounding moment. Beyond competition, the event celebrates rural sportsmanship, tradition, and community spirit. It showcases the deep bond between farmers and their bulls, preserving Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.
